Growing up in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma I wasn't interested in art at all, barely passing art class in school. My artistic outlet has been through my 45-year career as a hairstylist. But as I grew older, I regretted not paying attention in art class and learning how to draw that darn box with the vanishing point lines. I eventually wanted to be able to create a work of art but had no idea how. So, at the age of 30 I thought I would give it a try and I painted a forest scene with black and white house paint on a piece of wood and I haven't stopped creating my unique artworks since. My journey as an untrained artist has caused me to create my own technique, however unorthodox. My main technique involves permanent markers on glossy photo paper. I also use acrylic paint, alcohol ink, water color, crayon, pastels and anything else I might grab and use in the moment. I may use sandpaper, a Dremel, or a scribe to remove color or create texture. I usually create in a low-grade frenzy often beginning several pieces at a session. I enjoy juxtaposing colors that wouldn't normally be complementary. I also sometimes use the paint app on my computer and work with photographs I have taken. My wish is for the observer to see what they will in each piece so I am very careful with my titles so as not to steer the mind but allow the piece to speak without influence.
